Dordogne is the ideal place to discover ‘bastides’ and ‘chateaux’. In the Southwest of France a ‘bastide’ is a new town built out of scratch mainly in the 13th-and 14th C. during the French-English war. They were founded or commissioned by either the King of France or the King of England. This excursion will take you to Monpazier, founded in 1285 by Edward I, King of England. It is considered one of the most beautiful bastide in France. To allow comparison you will also visit a French bastide, Villereal, founded in 1269 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint-Louis, King of France. Your excursion will be completed by a guided visit of the imposing Château de Biron (12th-18th C.), the largest castle of Perigord. This château was the home of the same family, the Gontaut-Biron, from the 12th  C. to the 20thC.

Other possible tours: Domme, La Roque Gageac, Castle of Beynac, Commarque, Castle of Castelnaud,

  • Castle of Biron, the largest castle of Perigord
  • The lovely medieval village of Monpazier, the perfect model of a “bastide”
  • A picturesque food market or an organic grown winery
